Ingredients

Ingredients for spot idli recipe:

For batter:

  • urad dal - 1 cup
  • Idli rava - 2 cups

For tawa idli:

  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Chopped curry leaves - 1 spring
  • Chopped onions - 1 cup
  • Green chilles - 2
  • Chopped tomatoes - 1 cup
  • salt - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - as required

Instructions

 Procedure for spot idli recipe:

Soaking:

  1. Rinse a cup of urad dal 3-4 times and soak for 4 hours.

  2. Soak 2 cups of idli rava for at least 10-15 minutes or more.

Idli batter:

  1. Grind the soaked urad dal with some water until it becomes a fine paste.

  2. Transfer the batter to a bowl.

  3. Squeeze idli rava and add to the batter.

  4. Mix well both urad dal mixture and idli rava without lumps.

  5. Cover and ferment for 7 hours.

  6. Once the batter has fermented, If necessary add some water to make it into a medium-thick batter.

  7. Add the required salt mix the batter and set aside.

Spot idli on tawa:

  1. Heat a tawa to add 2 tablespoons of oil.

  2. Add a spring of chopped curry leaves.

  3. Add a cup of chopped onions and 2 green chillies.

  4. Fry until the onions turn golden.

  5. Add a cup of chopped tomatoes. Fry until they turn mushy.

  6. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of red chilli powder. Fry for a minute.

  7. Divide into 4 equal portions and adjust the mixture into a round shape.

  8. Pour a ladle full of batter and shape it as idli.

  9. Cover and cook for 10 minutes over a low flame.

  10. Sprinkle a teaspoon of red chilli powder.

  11. Flip the idli and cook for another 2 minutes.

  12. Once both sides are cooked, Remove the idli from the pan and serve hot with chutney or sambar.

Recipe Notes

  • For making perfect idli soaking idli rava is also an important step.
  • Can use the remaining idli batter for this recipe.
  • If necessary add some water to make a medium-thick batter.
  • Can add sambar powder or karam podi or simply add chilli powder.
  • Adjust the chilli powder if you are serving for kids.
  • Flip the idli after the batter dries on the top.
  • Cook the tawa idli over a low flame.
